Glomerular Hemodynamics

C Baylis and RC Blantz

The renal glomerulus is not a passive filter but an organ capable of responding to, as well as synthesizing, a variety of hormones. Thus the glomerulus participates actively in the control of its own filtration rates. The normal control systems that regulate glomerular filtration rates and single nephron glomerular filtration rates are complex, and significant information has been obtained regarding factors responsible for the progression of various types of renal disease.
