The developing fetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid. In the first half of gestation this fluid closely resembles fetal extracellular fluid, but later it becomes hypotonic. Fetal urination and drinking as well as the permeability of fetal membranes (amnion and/or chorion) are important determinants of composition and volume. Hormones, such as prolactin and cortisol, may play a major role by affecting membrane permeability.
