Angiogenesis: What Makes Blood Vessels Grow?

J Folkman

The study of angiogenesis began almost two decades ago in an attempt to understand the role of vascularization in tumor growth. It is now a major field that includes the growth and regression of capillaries in embryological development, physiological functions, and pathological states. Both angiogenic peptides and angiostatic steroids serve in an elaborate control system of capillary growth, which in turn governs both growth and involution of tissues.
