Antibodies to surface antigens can target specific neuronal populations for destruction, sometimes with surprising results. In rats, for example, antibodies to the widely distributed synaptic enzyme acetylcholinesterase cause selective ablation of preganglionic sympathetic terminals. This phenomenon is relevant to autonomic disorders of human patients and may also yield insights into normal autonomic physiology.
