Bugs and Barriers: Enteric Pathogens Exploit Yet Another Epithelial Function

G Hecht

Recently, there has been an explosion of information concerning bacterial-epithelial cell interactions. These studies have revealed various mechanisms by which bacterial pathogens exploit host cell machinery to their own advantage and have demonstrated that pathogenic organisms can interfere with the pathways that regulate barrier function, one of the basic properties of epithelia.
