Arterial endothelial cells are able to perceive the shear stress generated by flowing blood in the form of shear deformations and modulate the tone of underlying smooth muscle. This mechanism provides continuous adaptation of arterial hydraulic resistance to flow rate and viscosity of blood and significantly contributes to vascular system control.
