Hepatorenal and Hepatointestinal Reflexes in Sodium Homeostasis

H Hosomi and H Morita

Hepatorenal and hepatointestinal reflexes with receptors in the hepatoportal region transduce portal plasma Na+ concentration into hepatic afferent nerve activity and reflexively augment renal Na+ excretion and attenuate intestinal Na+ absorption before a measurable increase in systemic Na+ concentration. These reflexes contribute to Na+ homeostasis in a negative, "feedforward" fashion.
