Dreaming About Diving: Sleep Apnea in Seals

MA Castellini

Not only can seals dive underwater for long periods, they also hold their breath while sleeping on land. Many of the same physiological processes involved in the regulation of diving apnea appear to be of importance in sleep apnea. Studying seals provides valuable insights into the control and development of sleep apnea.
