Microfluorometric imaging of second messengers has revealed a variety of subcellular signals and has contributed to our understanding of physiological as well as pathophysiological processes. An overview of imaging techniques and their perspectives in detecting second messenger signals as well as several examples of achievements with these techniques are presented.
