Symbiotic Exploitation of Hydrogen Sulfide

GN Somero

It has long been axiomatic knowledge that all organic life on earth, animal as well as plant, is ultimately based on energy from the sun. Not so any more. Recent discoveries at the bottom of the ocean have revealed rich communities of animals that use entirely novel physiological mechanisms to obtain energy. These communities surround hot springs where emerging water contains high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. This highly toxic compound provides the energy that makes the animals largely if not completely independent of the photosynthetic food chain.
