Both during normal respiration and under hypoxic conditions respiration is regulated by inputs from multiple peripheral chemoreceptors. Denervation of the carotid bodies therefore does not represent total elimination of inputs from peripheral chemoreceptors. Denervation of all known chemoreceptors suggests that there may be still unidentified peripheral or perhaps central mechanisms that respond to hypoxic conditions.
