Hunger is elicited by depletion of nutrients, but what specific signals cause food intake? Recent data suggest that the signal comes not from depletion of carbohydrates or other major nutrients but from overall decreased cellular power production. And what causes satiation, which occurs largely before ingested nutrients can cross the intestinal barrier and replete the inner supply? Metabolic hormones such as glucagon and insulin are released and induce mobilization of endogenous reserves, thus inhibiting further ingestion of food.
