Clara cells are the most common epithelial cells in the small airways of many mammals, but their function is for the most part still unknown. They are difficult to study in situ, but in culture they absorb Na+. If the Na+ is followed by a counterion and passive flow of water, the cells would function in fluid absorption. Thus fluid from the alveoli could be absorbed in the small airways, and the Clara cells could help keep the lungs dry.
