What are the Roles of Interferons in Physiological Conditions?

V Bocci

Interferon was discovered in 1957 as a natural antiviral substance. Since then other interferons have been described, and their antiproliferative and immunomodulatory effects are now being exploited in clinics. However, interferons as well as other cytokines are also produced in physiological conditions at particular sites. The efficiency of the immune system in preserving homeostasis and allowing survival depends, at least in part, on this continuous response.
