Lipid Asymmetry and Transport Function in Renal Epithelial Cells

C Le Grimellec, G Friedlander and M-C Giocondi

The apical region of the plasma membrane of renal epithelial cells is characterized by low fluidity related to its lipid composition. Marked changes in transport processes during physiological, pathological, or pharmacological alternations in membrane lipids strongly suggest that lipid composition of apical membranes plays an important role in the renal tubular function.
