High-Altitude Bird Flight: Exercise in a Hostile Environment

A few species of birds, notably the bar-headed goose (Anser indicus), fly at great altitudes (9.000 m or 29.500 ft) and undergo severe hypoxia during their semiannual migration. Specializations in a number of organ systems of these birds appear to allow this activity.
