Thermoregulation During Sleep in Mammals

PL Parmeggiani

In mammals thermoregulation is operative during sleep, with synchronized electroencephalogram (EEG) showing only quantitative changes in threshold and gain of responses to thermal loads with respect to wakefulness. Both behavioral and autonomic thermoregulatory responses are impaired during sleep with desynchronized EEG concomitant with deep depression in hypothalamic-preoptic thermosensitivity.
