Analgesia evoked by stimulation in the dorsal or ventrolateral part of the midbrain periaqueductal grey matter is accompanied by characteristic patterns of cardiovascular and motor change. These integrated responses may underlie some of the specific patterns of behavior that are evoked by different forms of stressful environmental stimuli.
