Alpha-Adrenergic Modulation of Cardiac Rhythm

Sympathetic cardiac innervation results in development of 41-kDa GTP regulatory protein that transduces the effect of alpha-1-agonist binding with Na-K pump stimulation and decreased automaticity. Activation of another alpha-1-receptor subtype increases automaticity, stimulates phosphatidylinositol metabolism, increases (Ca2+)i, and may induce arrhythmias during ischemia and reperfusion.
