The L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway and vasoactive intestinal peptide, both widely distributed in tissues and organs, have different localizations, different activation and release mechanisms, and different signal-transduction systems. Their combined action, however, enhances the effectiveness of their vascular and nonvascular smooth muscle relaxation.
