Endocardial endothelium modulates contractile performance of subjacent cardiomyocytes, thus providing intracavitary autoregulation of cardiac performance, i.e., by altering the duration of systole with no effects on early pressure rise and ejection. The possibility that an intracoronary (micro)vascular endothelium-mediated autoregulation also occurs has been recently demonstrated.
