Fibrogenesis represents either a necessary or an unwanted process. Stimulators of fibrosis (e.g., angiotensin II, aldosterone, and endothelins) are normally counterbalanced by inhibitors (e. g., bradykinin, prostaglandins, and glucocorticoids). Fibrosis appears when this cooperative and balanced reciprocal regulation is lost.
